Diet and Support

High protein. High fat. Low carbohydrate.

Hills makes a cancer diet, and if your dog will eat it and you can afford it for a large dog, use that. Otherwise, get a high quality performance diet and supplement with fish, chicken, cottage cheese and oils.

When Jesse wouldn't eat, I made him sandwiches with Power Meat and rice bread (rice flour, flax oil, yeast, milk).

Dogs need a good vitamin/mineral supplement, extra E and B vitamins and oil.

For treats, use broccoli, tomatoes and carrots.

Nature's Recipe now has doggy treats made from venison. Jesse went crazy just looking at the package. Half a stick soaked in water makes a broth that he found irresistible.

Whatever you do, try to keep the pounds on the dog.

I cooked everything in olive oil and flax oil. Red sauce for pasta is good for perking up an appetite, and it now appears that it's also good for fighting cancer. Hurray.

Exercise is essential. It's a great antioxidant and keeps the appetite good.

If all else fails, call Pizza Hut. Once a week during chemo when the appetite lags.

Disclaimer: I'm not a vet. But this has kept my dog alive for much longer than anyone thought possible. Including his doctor.
